Welcome to the official Screaming Brain Studios website! If you are here, then something about my graphic work must have caught your attention!
I began the Screaming Brain project with one main goal in mind: To preserve and provide Old School Graphics made using Old School Tools for anyone and everyone out there who either lacks artistic ability, the time to make their own, or the money to pay someone else.
Every graphic pack was made with a specific technique or style in mind, and has been released completely free under the Creative Commons 0, or Public Domain license. This means they can be used in any way you wish! Including commercial or non-commercial projects, editing and redistributing, or just plain sharing them wherever and with whoever you want! Credit is welcome, but never required!
A large number of Screaming Brain Studios‘ assets have been created using a series of utilities and tools that are unfortunately no longer available to the public. This means I may be one of the only remaining users in the world working with some of these tools, and I have taken it upon myself to keep them alive in some way. Sadly, there is no way to acquire them, the companies who produced them have disappeared, all possible means of contact have been attempted, and I am not legally permitted to redistribute them. I will however demonstrate various techniques and procedures used to create a lot of the assets in my graphics packs using alternate software (Such as GIMP or Photoshop) to achieve similar results. If a tool or utility is currently available, whether free or commercially, I will also link to the website where it can be downloaded or purchased. I have also compiled a list of utilities and tools that I use regularly which you can find here.
I don’t really consider myself a professional graphic artist. I tend to think of myself as more of a tinkerer or hobbyist, but I would love to share what I learn along the way. A lot of my time is actually spent reading and researching or developing various techniques used to achieve very particular things. This includes scouring through decades worth of archived or defunct forums, websites and e-books on the Wayback Machine, as well as scrolling through countless webpage iterations across the years searching for lost information, digging up cached downloads, or learning obsolete software with no documentation. In some cases, I have managed to track down software abandoned or forgotten by time, while in other cases I have discovered caches of public domain textures that still hold up today and have converted them into various isometric tile-sets.
My secondary goal is to collect as much information as I can, and as many random techniques (no matter how niche they may be) and gather them all into one place for those of you who, like myself, do not wish to see these beautiful graphics disappear or fade into the past. I will be providing tutorials and articles related to the creation of most of my graphic packs to the best of my ability, utilizing software and tools that are currently freely available so that you can modify the existing graphics or create your own expansions and additions.
Thank you for joining me on this journey, friends.
